Turmeric Digestive Chutney
This Ayurvedic Recipe is perfect for digestive support!
Ok everyone, we have had so many reach out today with congestion! Seems like the season welcomed some joyful practices that may have depleted the system, slowed agni (digestive fire) and resulted in an accumulation of kapha dosha. While this turmeric digestive chutney isn’t the remedy for everything, it is a quick fix during both the Spring and Winter seasons. We can use this before or with meals to support the heavy qualities we generally welcome into the system this time of year to build immunity and strength for the cool long nights.
All you need: Turmeric + Ginger + Chilis + Lemon + Mustard Seed
There you have it. A simple and easy to make ayurvedic chutney! Blend these babies up, store in a jar and use a small amount as soon as you feel the onset of accumulated mucus in the system or slowed digestive agni. **signs of low agni or accumulation of ama may include lack of hunger, heaviness upon rising, sticky tongue coat, fatigue without exertion**
Before meals you can enjoy a pea size amount of chutney, scooped out on the tip of the pinky finger and eaten alone as a digestive aid. Be mindful if heat increases too much in the system to not overuse. During the Winter season it can be used with meals in small amounts like other chutney blends.
Turmeric Digestive Chutney would be considered an aaharyogi or “food friend” in the Ayurvedic texts. This would be something that acts friendly to the digestive system supporting the intake of food.
Try it before your meal or add it in small amounts to the Fenugreek Roti or Millet Pancake.
Note that lime can be substituted for the lemon upon availability. Oil can be added for excess dryness in the system or even try coconut to make it heavier and tasty for combining with meals. If mustard seed is too warming hing (asafetida) is a lovely substitute especially if you suffer from excess gas or bloating (add just a tiny pinch as little goes a long way). For digestive purposes we recommend the original recipe. This recipe should not be used over 8 days in a row during the winter season due to the excess drying nature of the pungent taste. Take a break and enjoy another chutney!
