Let’s Begin Today: Tips to Ayurvedic Health at Home

Ever heard of habit stacking? It’s our favorite method for introducing life-changing habits. Ayurveda isn’t about an overnight pantry overhaul. It is about bringing consciousness into action so you can make choices towards health that feel good to you. Here are some universal Ayurvedic insights to get us started:

Main Causes of Disease

  • Failure of the Intellect
  • Misuse of the 5 Senses
  • Time (Aging)

As we start our Beginner’s Guide to Ayurveda we want to consider these three areas. More often than not we “know” something may not be good for us but do it anyway. Either out of habit or desire. This could be food we eat, the way we greet the world, activities and overall lifestyle choices we take in through the 5 senses.

We challenge you to start today! What is one thing you can swap out today with something that makes you feel good, healthy and energized? It may be as simple as taking a few moments of quiet in a busy day, or more complex like replacing your daily gas station snack with a homemade treat. It’s up to you. Small steps lead to big leaps!

Self Mastery with Ayurveda

Knowledge is a superpower. While we love working together with clients in Ayurvedic Consultations our main focus is ultimately to provide you with the tools to make healthy choices for yourself. This is why wellness education is for everyone.

Beginner’s Guide to Healthy Eating through Ayurveda

Step 1 of your home practice would be to learn more about digestion. You can jump to our Digestive BLOG or join the wellness challenge with Principles of Health.

Step 2 would be looking first not at what we eat but how we eat. According to Dr Amruta Athale, the lead teacher for our Professional Ayurveda Programs, “We are not just what we eat, but how we eat and digest our food”.

Here are some golden eating tips passed down by Vedic scholars for millennia:

Top Healthy Eating Tips in Ayurveda

  • Eat only when hungry.
  • Stop eating when you’re 75% full.
  • Make lunch your biggest meal.
  • Say no to cold drinks at meal times.

In our 5-Week Online Wellness Challenge we dive deep into you these practices with handy guides, check lists and supportive resources to help you implement these practices in an easeful way. And the best part is you can start these today at home! Try opening discussions with family or loved ones. Incorporate a new suggestion each week and notice how you feel after one month! Slow and steady wins the race, especially when it comes to Ayurveda.

Optimizing Health with Ayurveda’s Three Pillars

Food, sleep, and energy expenditure (yes, including sex and exercise!) form the axis of Ayurvedic health. These are known as the Three Pillars of Health. Let’s break these down!

  • Food: We’ve talked about intake, but what about the food itself? Ayurveda teaches us about the qualities and tastes of food and their impacts on the body and mind. Start by exploring our post on the 6 Tastes of Ayurveda. Then learn to create a goal oriented meal plan in our 5-Week Wellness Journey or by working with us in an Ayurvedic Consultation.
  • Energy Use: Finding a balance between input and output is crucial. Moderate exercise and sexual activity, tailored to your energy levels, are key. Awareness is the first step toward balance. Health programs generally lean into either lightening, purifying and cleansing programs or building, tonifying and rejuvenation. Ultimately we should each have enough energy to exercise daily until we break a sweat on our brow. This is a good baseline for most people. Sexual activity should on average be moderate with 1-2 times a week if desired appropriate. As we work deeper into your goals, your constitution, time of life and the season this may very but as an overall approach this is just fine. Over or exercising and excessive sexual activity can not only make you tired, but deplete your bodily systems which over time can lead to poor quantity muscle and organ tone and reduced longevity, fertility and health. On the opposite scope lack of exercise can lead to poor quality muscle and organ tone with excessive fatty tissue, blockages and sluggish movement within the systems of the body.

Balance is key. Often simply bringing awareness to these concepts is the first step and that is our goal for you! By working with an Ayurvedic Practitioner we can dig deeper to uncover supportive patterns of behavior to build long term health.

  • Sleep: Quality sleep transforms food into energy and nourishment. Aim for a sleep schedule that rejuvenates you, ideally rising with the sun and winding down by 10 PM. Both oversleeping and a lack of physical activity are often leading contributors to building poor quality tissues and overall sluggishness. Ideally we would rise around or slightly before the sunrise, and start winding down after sunset to go to sleep by 10 or 11pm. Some people need slightly more or less sleep that can be determined in an individual Ayurvedic Consultation. If you feel energy dip in the afternoon it’s a great time to shift attention to a meditation or breath practice. This can serve as “rest” without depleting energy and digestive capacity with sleep. If those areas interest you we can address them in your private session.
